THE SAINT GIRONS CHURCH AND ITS FRAMEWORK

At Monein, discover the most beautiful and largest gothic Church in Bearn (15th century).
A guided visit will explain the buildings construction, style and the rich past of the village of Monein.
A climb of 72 steps, leads you to the amazing wooden framework of this Church. Built in heart oak, it forms an upside down double ship hull. This showpiece, unique in France, illuminâtes an unforgettable spectacle of sound and light.

THE HOSTEL AT LACOMMANDE
Founded between 1100 and 1124, the hostel played a key rôle in the network of hostels established by Gaston IV (the Crusader) to welcome the pilgrims walking on the route via Arles.
You can visit a harmonious Church with médiéval sculptures and chapiteaux evoking biblical scènes.
Outside, the cemetery holds round headstones from the 10th century, unique to Bearn, alongside a beautiful park that is very enjoyble to stroll in.

MONEIN, THE VINEYARDS AND JURANCON

In the heart of the vineyard... Monein certainly warrants a visit !
Nicknamed « Little Paris » by Henri IV, Monein will unfold its history and hidden treasure in its streets.

In Bearn you will find, talented artists, brimming with ideas and new concepts using their skils to produce traditional or futuristic artworks. They draw on personal expérience and their imagination, to create their artworks. Don’t hesitate to open the doors to their workshops, they will be more than happy to welcome you.

 

THE GASTRONOMY OF BEARN
From farm to farm, the producers welcome you to discover their traditional farming (duck, foie gras, magret…). Bearn is characterised by its classical dishes like Garbure and Poule au Pot. Discover the Roussane peach, an ancient cultivar that is unqiue to Monein, the species of cow ‘Blonde d’Aquitaine’ a mark of quality. Go and meet with the shepherds who will offer you a taste of their sheeps cheese from the appellation Ossau-Iraty, with a flavour that transports you to the mountains where they spend the summer.
